On the first day we scouted the Zambezi river for a nice hippo bull. Alan had a perfect shot on day 2 of the hunt. And bagged a big bull. Then the work started baiting for leopard. Hanging baits, checking baits, by the 7th day we had to top up on some baiting animals. Taking a kudu cow and baboons to replenish our baiting sites. The evening of the 8th day of the hunt at 7pm it all happened. We had a good blind set up and Alan shot a nice old tom. In total we had 3 mature male leopards on bait. The remaining 4 days we spent trying to bag a few other species. And had a good morning fishing by putting one of our old baits in the river attracting numerous fish species. Although we anticipated a leopard hunt for several years, nothing could compare us for the amazing adventure we would experience from the moment we arrived at Matombo camp with CM Safaris. The camp had a beautiful view overlooking the Zambezi river and provided a great place to sit by the campfire for star gazing, watching amazing sunsets and interesting conversations. Accommodations were fairly primitive but very comfortable, clean and well maintained. The meals were fantastic and better than most chefs prepare in fine restaurants. The desserts were especially excellent and always a highlight of the evening meal. Blake is a superb PH and a highly intelligent, experienced hunter. He understands the environment, the terrain and most importantly the species being hunted, to be successful. He and his team of trackers, skinners and driver were extremely focused on making sure the client is satisfied with the hunting experience. Every part of the hunt from stalking a hippo and tiger fishing on the Zambezi to the exciting culmination of taking a beautiful Zambezi valley leopard, was the dream of a lifetime. It almost goes without saying that anyone interested in leopard or hippos hunting will not find a better hunting experience. We highly recommend both Blake and CM Safaris. - Al, May 2014 |
