| 10 Day Hunt | |
Missed first morning due to lost luggage. Hunted that afternoon, chased warthog but no shot. Tracked buffalo herd but no bulls. Day 2 – decided to hunt leopard, shot impala and hung for bait. Saw buffalo turned down. Days 3-6 : we tracked buffalo but no shooters and shot bait and hung. Only female leopard on bait. Day 6 – tracked herd of buffalo. John shot a very good dagga boy at 15-20 yards. Perfect shot, the rest of the day we hung more baits for leopard and hyena. Days 7-10 did a lot of walking and driving looking for kudu etc… but none seen. Sat for hyena, saw some but they left before shooting light. On the 9th morning sat for big leopard near camp on hyena bait. No luck until the 10th evening the leopard was in the tree at 17:55 but unfortunately could not see if it was male or not. Checking tracks at bait next morning there was male and female tracks but am sure we had the male in the tree but did not want to take the chance. I think we shall see John again to chase some buffalo and elephant, maybe a leopard and try find the grey ghost (kudu). |

First African safari and had a great time. Saw plenty of buffalo and elephant, but not much in the way of plainsgame. There was a leopard tag available when I arrived so decided to try and shoot one. Unfortunately no luck. Though we did have a leopard in the tree the last evening for 10 minutes, but could not tell whether it was male, so didn’t shoot. Rich Tabor is an excellent PH and I look forward to coming back to hunt with him again soon. Maybe later in the year next time so we can see plainsgame. - John, April 2010 |
